Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio has attended his last flag raising ceremony at the Philippine Supreme Court today. The Acting Chief Justice is scheduled to retire on friday when he reaches the mandatory retirement age of 70. Supreme Court personnel feted him with a certificate of appreciation and a plaque of recognition for his contributions to the judiciary. Known for his vocal defense of the Philippines in the dispute with China over the West Philippine Sea, there was no mention of politics in his farewell speech. Justice Carpio only recalled his first days as a newly appointed Associate Justice 18 years ago and paid tribute to his staff and all those he worked with at the high court.
